Power BI - What is ArcGISMap ? and How to use ArcGISMap in Power BI

ArcGISMap is a visualization component in Power BI that allows users to incorporate geographic data and create interactive maps within their reports. ArcGISMap leverages the capabilities of Esri's ArcGIS mapping platform, enabling users to visualize spatial data in various formats such as points, lines, polygons, and heatmaps.

To use ArcGISMap in Power BI, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare Your Data: Ensure that you have geographic data in your dataset. This data should include geographical fields such as latitude and longitude coordinates, country names, city names, postal codes, etc. Power BI supports various data sources including Excel, CSV, SQL databases, etc.

  2. Open Power BI Desktop: Launch Power BI Desktop application on your computer.

  3. Import Data: Import your data into Power BI Desktop by clicking on the "Get Data" button in the Home tab, then select the appropriate data source and follow the prompts to connect to your data.

  4. Create a Report Page: Once your data is imported, create a new report page by clicking on the "Report" tab and selecting "New Page".

  5. Add ArcGISMap Visualization: Click on the "ArcGIS Map" visualization icon from the Visualization pane on the right side of the screen. This will add an empty map to your report canvas.

  6. Configure the ArcGISMap Visualization: Drag and drop your geographic fields (e.g., latitude, longitude, country, etc.) into the appropriate fields of the ArcGIS Map visualization. Power BI will automatically detect the geographic fields in your dataset and map them accordingly.

  7. Customize the Map: Customize the map as needed by adjusting settings such as map styles, zoom levels, map layers, colors, tooltips, etc. You can also add additional data layers, reference layers, or annotations to the map.

  8. Interactivity: Utilize the interactivity features of ArcGISMap to create dynamic and interactive visualizations. You can enable features such as drill-down, filtering, tooltips, and cross-filtering to enhance the user experience.

  9. Save and Publish: Once you're satisfied with your report, save your Power BI file and publish it to the Power BI service to share it with others or embed it in other applications.

By following these steps, you can effectively use ArcGISMap in Power BI to visualize and analyze your spatial data.
